What is Golden Fried Rice?

"Golden fried rice" typically refers to fried rice that has a slightly golden hue, often achieved by incorporating egg yolks into the rice. The egg yolks add a rich, golden color and also enhance the flavor and texture of the fried rice. In some recipes, the rice is mixed with beaten egg yolks before frying, resulting in a beautifully colored and flavorful dish.

olden fried rice is a variation of traditional fried rice, and its exact origins are not precisely documented. However, fried rice itself has a long history in Chinese cuisine, dating back thousands of years. It's believed to have originated in China as a way to use up leftover rice and other ingredients. Over time, fried rice has evolved and been adapted in various ways, including the addition of egg yolks to create the "golden" version.

While the specific origins of golden fried rice may be unclear, it has become a popular dish in many Asian and fusion cuisines, appreciated for its vibrant appearance and delicious taste.

  • Salt and pepper: Seasoning agents, adjust according to personal preference.
  • Mixed veggies: Adds color, texture, and nutritional value to the dish.

How to make Golden Rice

  1. Choose Your Rice: Jasmine rice is commonly used for fried rice due to its fragrance and texture, but you can use other types like long-grain white rice or brown rice if preferred.
  2. Rinse the Rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky when cooked.

  1. Cook the Rice: Use a rice cooker or a pot on the stovetop to cook the rice according to the package instructions. The typical ratio is 1 part rice to 1.5-2 parts water. Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains and allow it to cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Egg Mixture: Separate the egg yolks from the whites. Mix the egg yolks with a splash of Shaoxing wine, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Combine the Rice and Egg Mixture: Gently fold the egg yolk mixture into the cooked rice until every grain is coated. This will give the rice its golden color and add richness to the dish.
